Our annual Executive Assembly takes place at a time of unprecedented transition for the energy sector. As the principal impartial network of energy leaders, it is right that we gather to consider the implications of this transition globally, regionally and, most importantly, nationally. Our Congress last year highlighted the significant changes impacting us all and the time is right to consider how these changes are reflected in each country. As the World EnergyCouncilis comprised of member committees, this agenda speaks to the heart of who we are and, with our young leaders, where we want to go.

The opportunity to meet in one of the oldest cities in the world reminds us of our important stewardship role for the energy sector. Each member country has an important role to play in contributing to an affordable, stable and environmentally resilientenergy system for the greatest benefit of all.

I look forward to welcoming many of you to our meetings and discussions in Lisbon, and thank our Portuguese member committee for hosting us in 2017.

As Chairman of Associação Portuguesa da Energia, the Portuguese member committee that will host the 2017 Executive Assembly of the World Energy Council, I look forward to the opportunity to welcome the World Energy Council community next October in Lisbon!

This meeting will be an opportunity to review the Council’s strategy to more efficiently promote the global access to energy services, in a secure and environmentally sustainable way. As an organization open to the world, major issues that are challenging the sector will be discussed with top level guests during Energy Leaders and Ministerial meetings. Future Energy Leaders will contribute with their innovative views. Achievements and prospects of the Portuguese energy sector will be shared during the National Conference to which all of you are invited.

Since the 14th Century, Lisbon has seen our navigators sailing to the Atlantic, Indic and Pacific Oceans, from Brazil to Japan, giving birth to the globalization era: it is your time to visit us and to enjoy Lisbon and the hospitality of the Portuguese!

Come to Lisbon and help us making the 2017 Executive Assembly a great and productive event – ‘for the greatest benefit of all’!
