World Energy Assembly 2017

Portuguese Committee Conference

Keeping Ahead of Energy Challenges
Insights and Forecasts

This event is free to attend for media and all registered participants

Decarbonization, driven by climate change threats, is the main challenge that the energy sector is facing and will face in the next decades. Renewable resources are already reducing GHG emissions in electricity generation, but their potential is still to be further explored, namely in the heating sector and for modern biofuels production. The electric vehicle is reducing emissions due to transportation, but decarbonizing heavy duty transport by land, sea and air, has a long way to go. Efficiency, from energy generation till final energy use, is also playing an important decarbonization role.

Electricity markets, the financial interface between generation and demand, need to adapt to the increasing shares of distributed and zero marginal cost generation in a changing environment of multiple players, new ancillary services, and increasing penetration of information and communication technologies.

In all those energy related fields, R&D is expected to provide innovative and economically viable technologies that will allow to reach the climate targets and to ensure the smooth functioning of the energy systems.

The Conference will address and discuss these issues, aiming to contribute to the supply of clean, safe and affordable energy, for the greatest benefit of all.
